Staff Pick from THE RETURN OF THE PINK PANTHER
Jason Simos, Director of Publicity and Media Relations for Focus Features, picks our "Clip of the Week”:
In Blake Edwards’ classic 1975 comedy THE RETURN OF THE PINK PANTHER – which was long out of print before being reissued for the Focus Features Spotlight Series on DVD – it’s hard to pick a favorite scene. The one in the Clip of the Week is the first one in the movie that brings two of the movie’s stars together; since the movie was reuniting Team Panther for the first time in over a decade, screenwriter/director Edwards and co-screenwriter Frank Waldman smartly layered in a dialogue-driven scene early in the picture that would reintroduce returning audiences – and also introduce new audiences – to the hysterical disconnect between Sûreté colleagues Charles Dreyfus (Herbert Lom) and Jacques Clouseau (Peter Sellers). The give/take gets going immediately after Edwards smash-cuts from a sequence wherein Clouseau – temporarily demoted from Inspector – was oblivious to a bank being robbed; Chief Inspector Dreyfus calls him out on the gaffe – or tries to. Who among us hasn’t had a workplace conversation like this one?
